Each year, student-published books entered into The National Book Challenge capture fact, fiction, exploration and ideas. This is a moment in time – when childhood dreams and writing are emerging and young authors are open to possibility, curiosity and vision.

Participating in the publishing process leading up to The National Book Challenge program is wild with imagination and bursting with eager anticipation. The final, published books always elicit grins and gasps. Most importantly, these student-published books fill school libraries with classroom memories, celebrate inspiring educators, encourage young writers, and link students across the country and, now, the nation. Plus, there’s prize money!

Unlock the Treasure

The one-and-only National Book Challenge is even more than all that… In a world where words become sound bites, dreams are digital and inspiration is fleeting, these student-created books capture and preserve the voices of youth. They grace family or classroom bookshelves for years. They span generations. Some become part of The Library of Congress. National Book Challenge books never cease to bring a smile to the faces of their authors or audience, from the moment they are first opened … to years after they were published. Being a National Book Challenge winner becomes a memory to treasure for a lifetime.

Make it Uniquely Meaningful and Lasting

There’s only one National Book Challenge in the entire world. And it celebrates books written and illustrated by children. We challenge all teachers to capture their unique classroom stories, build on the pride of publishing, cherish the moment the books are first opened and share the smiles created.

If we let them – and inspire them – every child can be an author.
